The workbench is the beating heart of every laboratory. It’s where every scientist does his work. And every other sort of activity that goes on in the lab ultimately revolves around what happens there. It goes without saying, therefore, that to do his best work, every scientist needs a good workbench.

But there’s more to a good workbench than just the bench itself. There is also a wide variety of different types of accessories that can be tacked on to every bench. Accessories help to improve functionality and allow researchers to do more concentrated work. RDM Industrial Products offers a great array of different workbench accessories and allows you to customize the workbenches in your lab in whatever way you need.

Adustable-Height ESD Workbench with Overhead Light / Accessory Boom

Whether your lab is dedicated to a specific sort of work that requires certain kinds of workbenches or whether each scientist on your team needs his own personalized combination of tools, we have you covered. Let’s have a look at some of the many different industrial-quality workbench accessories available.

Computer Accessories

Computers are indispensable laboratory tools. They log data, crunch numbers, and simplify all sorts of operations for a lab team. But sometimes, even relatively small computers can take up valuable space on a workbench. That space is essential for doing other kinds of work. Computer accessories for your workbench are generally meant to make life easier. Allowing you to access your computer while keeping it from dominating your workspace.

Some computer-based accessories include:

Monitor stands: These typically consist of a robotic arm of some kind that holds your monitor in position and allows you to rotate manipulate it as needed. We also have rear post mounted options that offer greater stability.

Keyboard trays: These can slide under your desk so that the keyboard doesn’t take up room on your workstations. If you want durability, we offer the option to have trays made of stainless steel.

Rail Stands: These are like monitor stands, only instead of a robotic arm to which you can attach your monitor, you have a whole rack on which you might be able to put multiple items.

Storage Accessories

Labs cannot function without proper storage facilities. Important lab documents should be tucked away for safekeeping and easy access. Hazardous chemicals should be stored in an area where they can be sure not to wreak havoc or endanger the health and safety of lab workers. Tools integral to everyday operations of an industrial or research lab should be stored in convenient locations and kept close at hand. RDM thus offers your lab or industrial workspace, a large number of different storage solutions.

Here are just a few storage accessories:

Base Cabinets: When you add base cabinets to your workbench, it becomes an all-in-one workstation and storage facility. Adding on something as simple as a few base cabinets can thus noticeably expand your researcher’s capabilities while at work. We offer customized cabinets made of stainless steel, phenolic and chemical-resistant trespa, among other materials. For those working with dangerous substances, we can also make your workstation base cabinets flame-resistant.

Other Kinds of Cabinets: In addition to the base cabinets that come attached to many of our laboratory workbenches, you can also hang cabinets on the wall above your workstation or on a nearby wall to put more crucial lab items at your fingertips as you work. Large, walk-in cabinets are also available for storing larger items. As with base cabinets, we are able to customize these other cabinets. We can make them according to your exact specifications, using materials various materials, and giving them chemical or flame-resistant properties.

File Drawers: We make durable and reliable file cabinets. Some with sliding drawers so that important mail as well as crucial laboratory paperwork is sent to or keep where it needs to be. If you desire added durability, we can make these out of metal.

Shelves: A simple overhead shelf might be just what’s needed to keep things in a convenient place as you work. Similarly, a shelf underneath your workbench may be just as useful, especially if you need a place to keep a desktop computer. We offer custom shelving of many kinds.

Tool Racks: Lab researchers regularly use all kinds of equipment throughout the day, but keeping everything right on their work counters, or even in the base or overhead cabinets, will tend to clutter things up. To help prevent that from happening we offer tool racks and pegboards on which to keep heavier and more cumbersome tools.

What we’ve said here only scratches the surface of the full range of different storage options available. We encourage you to check out some of our industrial-quality and factory-direct custom workbench accessories to help meet your lab’s storage needs.

Power and Lighting

For most industrial workbenches, some kind of lighting fixture is a standard feature. When working with chemicals and attempting to facilitate reactions, it’s important to get the dosages of everything just right, and proper lighting is crucial to accomplishing that. Thus, most workbenches come included with either fluorescent or LED lights of some kind.

If you want to modify or customize your workbench lighting, however, RDM has you covered. We not only offer overhead lighting fixtures for workbenches which hold either fluorescent or halogen bulbs but also sell smaller inspection lamps that you can attach to a post on your workbench and then drag and twist around as necessary to bring light to just the spots where you need it.

Of course, without a nearby power source, you can’t have the lighting you need. You can thus have manufacturer-direct workbenches created that come with long power strips which are about 4 feet long. The strip allows you to plug in your lights, your computer, and whatever devices you need right at the workstation.

Miscellaneous Accessories

We also manufacture a wide range of other kinds of standard workbench accessories. These accessories help improve the comforting efficiency of your lab workers, including:

Table lifts and risers that allow workbenches to accommodate researchers of various heights. Both when they are standing up and when they are sitting down.

Footrests are a great addition, for when lab workers get tired.

Caster wheels that we can attach to workbenches to make them mobile.

RMD Industrial Products has 37 years of experience creating quality-designed lab equipment and industrial furniture. And, RDM products and accessories are proudly manufactured in the USA. To make your workbenches the best that they be, let us help you customize them. You can customize your workbenches with whatever combinations of accessories you desire.

The Importance Of Ergonomic Workstations

Here at RDM, we believe that having the right tool for the job helps to increase safety and productivity. A commonplace this is overlooked is with laboratory equipment, specifically workstations. Ergonomic workstations offer increased levels of adjustability and comfort for your whole team.

RDM i-BOOM Ergonomic Lift Table with Monitor/KB/MS Tray

One of the major ways we have increased the ergonomics of our laboratory equipment is with height adjustability. Being able to change the height of an adjustable lab bench depending on the type of research being conducted allows you to save valuable space in the laboratory. This feature can also increase your team’s confidence while they perform precise procedures.

How Mobility Can Help To Increase Efficiency In The Lab

When most people think of ergonomic lab equipment, they go straight for height adjustability, but forget about mobility. Mobile lab tables make it effortless to customize and optimize workstations as your research progresses. They also make it easy for you to transfer your work, or equipment from one laboratory to the next in an efficient and organized fashion.

At RDM, we can help you increase the mobility of your workstations depending on your needs. The first kind of mobile workstation we offer is maneuverable lab tables and carts. These are easy to transfer to and from work areas, and they achieve this mobility with a smaller, easy to handle, stature. Larger lab benches and workstations can be equipped with durable research-grade casters that will allow them to be moved when needed. At RDM we work hard to ensure that adding mobility does not sacrifice the precision and rigidity found on our equipment.

How To Choose The Correct Ergonomic Laboratory Furniture?

When considering what kind of laboratory equipment you are looking for, consider how much space you are going to need. As well as what kind of work you will be doing at the workstation. You should also contemplate if you are going to use one workstation for multiple kinds of research. And keep in mind, the kinds of potentially hazardous conditions the workstation will be experiencing during its service.

Our team of experts can help you pick out the equipment that best fits the spacial and material constraints of your workplace. We have a wide selection of laboratory equipment that we can use as a template to build into your optimal workstation. All of our products feature industrial quality construction that will be able to stand up to the rigors of laboratory life.

What Customizations Are Available For Ergonomic Laboratory Furniture?

Customizing your ergonomic laboratory equipment is one of the best ways to ensure that it meets all of your needs. The first and easiest way to customize your equipment is by size. You can either get your equipment in one of our standard sizes, or you can specify custom dimension requirements. Additionally, you can specify how much height adjustment you need for your line of work. Height adjustment ranges anywhere from six inches to over sixteen inches depending on the model of the table. We can also beef up the materials used in the construction of the equipment. This will increase the overall weight capacity of the lift system and the table. The recommended weight capacities vary from 500 pounds to over 3,000 pounds. These weight capacities are often more than enough for most lines of work.

Another customization to ponder is what kind of material do you need the surface of the workstation to be. If you plan on working with corrosive materials, the plastic, stainless steel, or our chemical resistant compound are going to be some of the top choices. The electrostatic discharge and static-control surfaces are great for any sensitive electronics. While the solid wood butcher’s block is great for food preparation and research. These are some of the top surface materials we offer, and our team can help you choose the one that best fits your line of work or research.

Most of our adjustable work stations share a common industrial aesthetic that will fit into any professional work environment. However, we can customize the color pallet if you want your lab equipment to fit an existing style. The adjustability found on our workstations is primarily the result of either leg pins or an electronically controlled hydraulic lift system that comes with a manual hand crank backup. You can choose which of these options work best for your applications

How Accessories Can Help Increase Organization and Proficiency

Nearly all of our workstations can be further optimized with the usage of accessories. However, some accessories are exclusive to certain types of workstations. One of the most common yet effective types of accessories is the utility drawer. The utility drawer is a great way to keep track of important research notes and paperwork. Or it makes for a great place to store your tools while you move your workstation. Another great feature to consider is light fixtures. They allow you to have a consistent light source independent of your surroundings. Personal light sources can be manipulated without disturbing your peers. Adding features like an adjustable upper shelf, bin rail, or lower shelf will add some much-needed space. Organization and storage space are critical in a crowded laboratory workstation.

Why Choose RDM For Your Laboratory Needs?

When it comes to working efficiently in a lab, you need to make sure you have the right equipment for the job. Having the right equipment will help to cut down on safety risks. It will also increase overall productivity with your team. Our team at RDM Industrial Products, Inc., can help you choose the ergonomic laboratory furniture that will bring the best results to your lab, from adjustable lab benches to mobile lab tables and so much more. We think that having an ergonomic workstation is essential to getting the best results from your team. That is why we have worked hard to ensure that we can provide any product that you need for your laboratory.

As a laboratory professional, your mind is usually preoccupied with calculations, formulations and speculation, but when it comes to buying laboratory equipment, it’s perfectly okay for you to admit to entering uncharted waters. But since your daily operations depend upon acquiring the work station that suits your unique needs and tasks, it’s incumbent upon you to ask the right questions while shopping so the outcome is as successful as your most daunting scientific challenge.

What do you do?

The devil is in the details, so coming up with a succinct answer to what first appears to be a simple question requires specificity. List all of the tasks that you perform each day to get started, and don’t forget the tasks undertaken by lab associates who may use your workstation from time to time. Now, match those tasks with features currently installed on your existing lab bench and add features you wish you had to make your job easier and more efficient. Examples of considerations are: storage requirements, ergonomics, lab bench size and height, and importantly, proper work surface materials, because solids and liquids you may handle may call specifically for epoxy resin or stainless steel if they’re to hold up over the long haul.

Does size matter?

You’re in luck. Today’s work station can leave as large or as small a footprint as you need to accomplish your most daunting tasks because you live in a modular age and just about every set-up under the sun can be configured to meet space parameters. A schematic of your lab’s layout gets the process in motion. If you’re not skilled at ascertaining spacing parameters, ask someone who is adroit at measuring area precisely so you wind up with exact measurements indicating left-to-right width and front-to-back depth. Explain to whomever plots the area how much work surface is required to host vertical accessory systems and equipment and if any of that equipment is unusually heavy, make mention of that so you don’t wind up with weight lode construction issues.

Which bench supports your typical workflow?

Does your workflow resemble a Detroit assembly line where tasks are moved along in linear fashion or does your system require a back-to-back, signature T, U, X or Y layout plan to meet your needs? Given many choices and the popularity of modular design, you no longer have to settle for “one-size-fits-all” lab furniture that doesn’t perfectly suit your needs. Add ergonomic efficiency to your list of workflow requirements so lab techs don’t end their days suffering from the stress and strain of working at a station that is too high or too low. Experts agree that a 30.5-inch work bench height accommodates between 99.5-percent and 99.9-percent of men and women. If your unique tasks require surface height adjustments, you may wish to place a crank- or motor-driven adjustable height system atop your list of features you can’t do without.

What are your lighting and wiring needs?

Perhaps your lab furniture setup requires a specific style, height or type of lighting to accomplish tasks. It makes no sense to install banks of overhead lights that drive a power bill through the roof when individually lit stations make more sense. Further, today’s lighting market offers products that are designed to suit benches requiring unique illumination requirements. For example, your lab may need to compensate for too much or too little natural light–or you might need fixtures that are fitted with glare and light-reduction filters. On a complementary topic, critical decisions must be made about power outlets, cable and cord management, ground fault circuit interrupters, hard wired data ports plus interfacing links between work stations so monitors or laptops are an integral part of the overall lab bench design configuration.

How important is storage?

Your mother wanted you to put things back when you were finished with them and you have probably come to appreciate that lesson—particularly if you have been forced in the past to deal with lab furniture that was counter-intuitive to tasks you performed regularly. What saved you? Storage. But every laboratory’s storage needs are unique, which is why a thorough inventory of items you keep on hand is important–so you don’t choose drawers, cabinets and shelves that are incompatible with the shapes, sizes, weights and number of items and supplies that require quick retrieval. Why is this so important? Imagine discovering, after the fact, that implements or tools you use for everyday tasks are too long to fit into standard-size drawers you ordered and that you’re stuck with that bad decision. Proper storage is so important to efficient laboratory operations, you may wonder how you survived without it once your lab is revamped!
